Submersible Biological Filter
Submersible bio filters are most effective in smaller ponds (to 1000 gallons maximum).  They decrease pump maintenance by keeping the intake clean.  To prevent fish and tadpoles from being caught in filter, add a plastic mesh screen on the TOP of the filter on the OUTSIDE.  When water flow slows, remove the filter mat and clean with a hose.  Disassemble once a year to thoroughly clean the lava rock.  Hide with water lilies and aquatic plants.

Shady Lakes
"Deluxe" Bio Filter
The Deluxe Bio Filter is a submersible filter completely equipped with total flow control.  The pump is included.  A ball valve regulates the waterfall while the two-way diverter runs statues or fountains.  Only  used with the larger pump models (starting at 1200 gph).  With pump power of 3000 gph and above, it is more effective for filtration and maintenance to go with the pump in a pump basket powering an external biological filtration system.

External Biological/Phytological Filter
This external pond filter combines plants with bio filtration.  This is a good option for Koi ponds to separate plants from fish.  Water enters through the bottom settlement chamber to remove sludge and prevent clogging, then flows upward through lava rock and the roots of plants before returning to the pond.  A variety of aquatic plants can be used.  Pump and plants are not included, but lava rock and plant baskets are.  Disassemble and clean annually.  A simpler version of phyto filter is also available as a Plants Only filter without the lava rock.
